This week, the indefatigable Kelly Hoey sits with Barbara Kolsun, Executive VP and General Counsel for Stuart Weitzman. Barbara started Stuart Weitzman’s first in-house legal department and manages all legal matters for the company. With a history that includes being General Counsel of Seven For All Mankind and Assistant General Counsel of Calvin Klein Jeanswear Co., she’s a proven name in fashion law. But it doesn’t stop there— Barbara also clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit.

Barbara recently published Fashion Law: A Guide for Designers, Fashion Executives, and Attorneys (Fairchild Books), the first textbook on Fashion Law. She also lectures at the University of Chicago Law School.

Describe your first “real” job. What are you doing now?

First “real” job was babysitting for money at age 12. See above for current job – also Adjunct Professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?

The Madeline Albright “There is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women.”

Brag. Tell us about something really great or that you’re proud of or excited about.

How do you want your name to appear?

Tevis Rose Trower

Describe your first “real” job. What are you doing now?

Consumer Marketing at UPS.  This was in UPS’ first moments of really cultivating a relationship directly with consumers.  As a promote-from-within culture, it was anathema to the organization to bring in experts with large titles to create a consumer marketing strategy.  Their intended solution at the time was to hire numerous kids with freshly minted MBAs to come influence the culture from the bottom up.  Interesting idea with curious outcomes, the most positive of which for me individually was being thrown in to marketing/pr situations a more evolved marketing culture would have reserved for top brass.  Baptism by fire is a great way to grow.

Fast forward 20+ years, I’m still a glutton for walking into challenging situations.  Consulting to both best and worst-practice organizations on executive leadership, wellness and employee engagement strategies, over the past 10 years I’ve built a little idea into a multimillion dollar consultancy and loved every minute along the way.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?

“Be bold.” – Betsy Skolnik – former boss

Brag. Tell us about something really great or that you’re proud of or excited about.

Learning to surf.  Having crafted a life predicated upon being passionate about work, it’s so easy for those of us who truly love our work to forget how our creativity is fed by bold acts that force both the psyche and schedule to yield to new experiences.  Taking up surfing at the ripe age of 40 was a non-sequitur to my landlocked upbringing and my passion-fueled worklife picture.

40 under 40. Ones to Watch. Most Powerful. So many lists out there….. who is on your list (and why)?

Perhaps a different response,  I’m keeping an eye on how new grads respond to our current political and economic environment and how those trends surface.  I’m most interested in watching for young leaders to emerge and rally this truly empowered and connected population around important questions, their voices will have greater bearing on the next elections and coming decades than ever before possible.

What do you plan to accomplish by February?

Write a book and launch a consumer offering.

How do you want your name to appear?

Camille Preston, PhD

Describe your first “real” job. What are you doing now?

I was a “hut girl” in the White Mountains of NH. This entailed strapping boxes of food onto a packboard (image the frame of a backpack)and carrying food for guests up 4.3 miles to the AMC hut, then cooking and serving overnight guests dinner and breakfast.   On my first pack, I never asked how to crump (take a rest break) and they never told me that I was carrying among other things 20 dozen egs.   We served Quiche for the next three nights.

Today, I run AIM Leadership, a boutique leadership development company aimed at cultivating leaders who are agile, authentic and effective in our evermore virtual world.   I enjoy asking a lot of question (and yes, I still laugh everytime I eat quiche).

What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?

When debating dissertation topics in grad school, “Uncle Bob,” my 3rd grade teachers husband  told me “Do what you love - it will be more fun, more fulfilling and ultimate your passion will make it faster.

Brag. Tell us about something really great or that you’re proud of or excited about.

I feel incredibly blessed to work with talented, committed leaders to hone their ability to deliver results.   And there was one engagement, working with the executive team of the oldest and largest NGO in Afghanistan, that was profound.   Kabul is not on many peoples travel list - and someday I hope it will be.   We were tasked with building a high performing team in a small group that hadthe  6 different nationalities, 5 different religions and very different political affiliations.   How do you “build trust” when religious doctrines explicitly say infidels are not to be trusted?   It was eye opening and transformation for all of us, especially the facilitators.

40 under 40. Ones to Watch. Most Powerful. So many lists out there….. who is on your list (and why)?

Rather than watching specific people, I tend to ask what can I learn from this person.  I believe Curiosity is King.

  • Katie Raye - her energy, service and commitment to growing entrepreneurs.
  • Jenn Hill - her presence, creativity & depth of wisdom.

What do you plan to accomplish by February?

Launch my new book: Rewired: How to Work Smarter, Live Better and be more Purposely Productive in an OverWired world

Move into our new home on a warm, sunny  (Isn’t January the best time of year to move in Boston?)

A whole lot of telemarking.   We have fun family / business trips to Park City, Sun Valley & Tahoe.   Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Career Discovery Channel: The Freedom Tour’s Kate Northrup

1. How do you want your name to appear?

Kate Northrup

2. Describe your first “real” job. What are you doing now?

My first “real” job was working with a full-service catering and event planning company in Chelsea. We would listen to Madonna all day in the office and talk about flatware and ramekins. I lasted there four months until my boss asked me to cancel a party of my own I had planned on the weekend in order to work at a party for a client. I realized in that moment that having someone else own my time wasn’t going to work out so I quit.

Now I’m on The Freedom Tour and have spent the last year traveling the country, living out of my Prius, teaching women about creating financial freedom. My philosophy is that if you free yourself up financially you free up a lot of bandwidth to be more present to your purpose on the planet and to making the world a better place.

3. What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?

What is for you cannot pass by you.

4. Brag. Tell us about something really great or that you’re proud of or excited about.

I’m working on my first book and its due out in Spring 2013. I’m so excited to put everything I know and believe about women and money in one place for the first time!

5. 40 under 40. Ones to Watch. Most Powerful. So many lists out there….. who is on your list (and why)?

My grandmother Edna. She climbed to Mt. Everest Base Camp at the age of 84. She was the oldest North American woman to ever climb to base camp at 17,000 feet. My mother Christiane Northrup. She’s an inspiration to women across the globe to live more in synch with their bodies innate wisdom, but more importantly she’s an amazing mom. Marie Forleo for the way she’s giving women around the world permission to love their lives AND be successful AND be in really great, loving relationships while giving back. Danielle LaPorte because reading her work is like sitting in a temple getting a download of ancestral wisdom that your cells remember but that you had forgotten how to articulate. Kris Carr because she’s turned her diagnosis of cancer into a health revolution, inspiring us to replace the words “survivor” and “cure” with “thriver” and “prevention.”

6. What do you plan to accomplish by February?

I’m putting down roots in Sag Harbor, NY after putting 30,000+ miles on my car this year (and traveling thousands more on planes). I’m launching my first ever mentoring program where I’ll be teaching a very small, select group exactly how I created financial freedom so they can do it too. And hopefully I’ll be within sight of finishing my book for its deadline in March.

Career Discovery Channel: Lion’esque Media’s Melissa Gonzalez

1.  How do you want your name to appear?

Melissa Gonzalez, CEO of Lion’esque Media

2.  Describe your first “real” job. What are you doing now?

My first “real” job was on the Repo/Government trading desk of Lehman Brothers. Now I am the CEO of my start up company Lion’esque Media. From government bonds to fashion & lifestyle!

3.  What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?

The best piece of advice is that start up success is a marathon, not a sprint. Although it’s sometimes hard to remember, because we all want to see success right away, if we are steady and focused we will acheive it.

4.  Brag. Tell us about something really great or that you’re proud of or excited about.

This year, I was honored to be chosen as one of the Top 100 Young CEO’s in America and spent the day in DC. Sitting with congressional leaders and CEO’s like Sharie Redstone and Ed Rensit to lead a discussion on how to improve the environment for start ups in America was an honor. Now to continue to make a difference….

5. 40 under 40. Ones to Watch. Most Powerful. So many lists out there….. who is on your list (and why)?

On my list, I continue to be impressed by women like Rachel Sterne - leading the digital revoultion and nick-named “the City’s Head Nerd.” How Hot is that?

6.  What do you plan to accomplish by February?

This winter we have launched our beta of Lion’esque Style- an online destination giving followers VIP access to the hottest emerging brands. “Stop asking, Be asked!” is our motto- lead the conversation in the room by having the new “IT” brand first. Being present. Oh, and same thing for November, December, January and March. In April, I’ll take a little time to bemoan the past and dream about the future, then it’s back to the presence game. ;-)

Katie Raye - her energy, service and commitment to growing entrepreneurs.
Jenn Hill - her presence, creativity & depth of wisdom.

As it’s enunciated: Elmira Bayrasli

3.  What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Better to follow your own path imperfectly than to follow another’s perfectly - Bhagavad Gita

My daughter and my wife. They inspire me every moment of every day.
5.  40 under 40. Ones to Watch. Most Powerful. So many lists out there….. who is on your list (and why)?
I’m kind of done with with lists and I don’t pay much attention to age. In the end, who really cares. Just do great work and let others do what they do.
6.  What do you plan to accomplish by February?
Being present. Oh, and same thing for November, December, January and March. In April, I’ll take a little time to bemoan the past and dream about the future, then it’s back to the presence game. ;-)
